Haiku writing invitation developed for a group of educators on retreat.
Haiku is a form of Japanese verse traditionally written in 17 total syllables divided into three lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables respectively and often uses evocative allusions and comparisons. At a retreat center in the Colorado foothills, I invited retreatants to write a Haiku or two to as they reflected on their retreat experience capturing discoveries they had made. A quiet and inviting space was designed to foster this contemplative practice which ultimately led to first-time creative writers penning verses that revealed deep truths to them and moved hearts within their group.
